You wear clothes every day, hopefully. Sometimes the clothes you wear can become overwhelming due to just the amount alone you have in your closet. Have you ever tried to get ready to go out and looked at your overflowing closet thinking you have nothing to wear? Or found a really nice blouse that just doesn’t match anything you already have? These are common problems people come across when they are overwhelmed with their wardrobe. There are multiple ways to fix those issues by simplifying your wardrobe. With simplification comes a host of benefits.
Let’s look at the benefits first:
Reduce Decision Fatigue – You make thousands of decisions through everyday life. What if you could reduce that by just a smidge? You’d be surprised how big an impact reducing your wardrobe selection can have on your daily mental load. By having your wardrobe set to a method that works for you, you reduce the choices available and create a more enjoyable experience.
Save Money – Once you’ve got your wardrobe system down pact, you may be surprised at how much money you are saving when you don’t buy random pieces that don’t fit your aesthetic. By allowing yourself a set aesthetic, you end the temptation of buying random items that are considered fast fashion or items that you want just to have with no intention of wearing.
Quality Over Quantity – When you have your set method in place, you’ll find yourself searching for quality pieces that will hold not only their values but their color and/or material for years to come. While buying quality pieces can be a bit expensive up front, the life you’ll receive out of them will be worth it versus buying fast fashion that may only last less than a year.
Methods:
Sandwich Method – Match your top with your shoes (red top, blue jeans, and red shoes). This allows you to always be in sync while creating a clean look. This method works if you like to rock different colored sneakers or heels on rotation. It is simple and still gives you a variety of color with your shirt and shoe combinations.
Same Color Method – Wearing the same color can create your personal brand as well as slim down your wardrobe significantly. I personally wear a black shirt with blue jeans and black sneakers most of the time.
Neutral Colors – Whites, brown/beiges, blacks. All those neutral colors can be combined into a plethora of outfit ideas.
Declutter Your Closet – Once you have taken the time to curate your closet to what works for you…it is now time to declutter your closet. This may be the most satisfying part. You can clear out anything that does not match your closet system or does not fit.
BONUS Accentuate with Accessories – Some of you may be reading and think ‘But Adele, it’s how I express myself! My clothes are ME’. I get that completely. This article is for those who may need a fresh start or are looking to compact their wardrobe. One way you can still express yourself is with accessories! Purses, watches, jewelry, or belts can make or break any outfit. So, get creative with your paired back clothes and spice them up with your final touch accessories.
I hope the above methods and benefits have helped you rethink your own personal wardrobe. It’s helped me tremendously. Take the time to go through and dig deep into your closet. Do your clothes work for your current style? Do they all fit? Are they a good quality that will last you years to come? Just a few things to think about.
Happy styling and I would love to hear what method works for you. I may have missed a few, but I know ya’ll will help me learn something new in the comments.
